Rationale · Literacy is the foundation of learning. · The National Curriculum – English on capacity building in the use of language. Course description · Our goal is to provide a framework for the complex task of teaching literacy. · The NC strands are addressed: Language, Literature, Literacy. · Learning programs are developed are to be: comprehensive, coherent, developmental. · Learning activities are to bring the Literacy curriculum to life. Modules The course comprises 5 modules, each of approximately 1-4 hours: M1. Understand the components of literacy teaching: why, what, when, how, with-what, so what, how well. M2. Prepare Year and term plans for our current year level, based on the key literacy elements to be addressed. NAPLAN teaching requirements will be addressed. M3. Navigate through the wide range of literacy support materials and make choices on learning activities for your class. M4. Prepare a series of lessons focussing on chosen components of literacy e.g. the development of a phonics program to build student capacity to use language effectively. M5. Connect your literacy program to appropriate resources: both electronic and book resources.
