Documents Appear as Read-Only
Answer
Occassionally documents will open in Microsoft Word as Read-Only. This is shown in the main title bar as (Read-Only) next to the title name and as a result, you can only save the document to your desktop.
This problem is seen almost exclusively when using Microsoft Office 2007 due to the way in which it deals with online documents and is most pronounced when using Internet Explorer 6 or 7.
The problem will also be seen in documents whose filename contains an ampersand (&) and may occur in filenames that contain other punctuation marks.
To avoid this problem:
- Download and install Internet Explorer 8
- Check that the filename does not include punctuation marks and if so Rename the file by using the Right-Click Menu
- Make sure you have all the latest updates for Microsoft Office 2007 including all the latest Service Packs Occassionally, a file that has opened as Read-Only will continue to do so unless the folder is refreshed by right-clicking the folder and selecting Refresh from the Right-Click Menu.
Alternatively, refresh the Internet Explorer Browser window.
